Audi Burning Oil? Causes of TFSI Oil Consumption and What to Do

If your Audi needs topping up with oil between services, the most common causes are worn piston rings on some 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI engines, a faulty PCV (crankcase breather) valve, or an oil leak. A little oil use is normal on any turbocharged engine, but if you are adding oil every few weeks, it is worth finding the cause before it damages the engine or the catalytic converter.

How Much Oil Use Is Normal for an Audi?

Audi accepts that its engines use some oil between services, and the acceptable amount is set out in your owner’s manual. In practice, most healthy Audi engines in Dubai need little or no top-up between oil changes. If the low oil warning appears, or you find yourself adding a litre or more between services, the engine is using more than it should.

Common Causes of Audi Oil Consumption

1. Worn piston rings on 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI engines

Some earlier 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI engines, used in models such as the A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT from around 2008 to 2012, are known for high oil consumption caused by piston rings that let oil into the combustion chamber. The usual sign is steady oil loss with no visible leak, sometimes with fouled spark plugs.

2. A faulty PCV valve or crankcase breather

The PCV system controls pressure inside the engine. When its valve or diaphragm fails, oil can be pulled into the intake and burned. A failed PCV valve can also cause a whistling noise, rough idle or lean-running fault codes. It is a much cheaper fix than rings, so it is always checked first.

3. Oil leaks

Leaks from the valve cover gasket, timing cover, oil filter housing, turbo oil lines or rear main seal all lose oil. In Dubai heat, rubber seals harden faster. Look for oil spots under the car, a burning smell after driving, or oily residue on the engine.

4. Turbocharger seals

A worn turbo can push oil into the intake or exhaust. Blue smoke on acceleration, oil in the intercooler pipes or a loss of boost point to the turbo.

Signs Your Audi Is Using Too Much Oil

  • The low oil level warning comes on between services
  • Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust, especially on start-up or acceleration
  • Oil spots under the car or a burning oil smell
  • Misfires, rough running or fouled spark plugs
  • A check engine light with lean-running or misfire codes

What to Do Next

Check the oil level regularly using the MMI or dipstick, and top up with oil that meets the Audi/VW standard for your engine. Never let the level drop below minimum, because low oil can damage the turbo, timing chain and bearings. Then have the cause diagnosed.

At our Al Quoz workshop we measure how much oil the engine actually uses over a set distance, test the PCV system, check for leaks and, where needed, run compression or leak-down tests. You get the findings and a written quote before any work starts. Book a check with our Audi engine repair team, or if your oil change is due, see our Audi oil change service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep driving an Audi that burns oil?

Yes, as long as you keep the oil level topped up and get the cause checked soon. Running low on oil, or ignoring smoke and misfires, can lead to far more expensive engine and catalytic converter damage.

Will an oil change stop my Audi burning oil?

No. Fresh oil of the correct specification helps the engine, but it will not fix worn rings, a failed PCV valve or a leak. The cause needs to be diagnosed and repaired.

Is high oil consumption covered by Audi?

That depends on your car’s age, warranty and any manufacturer campaigns that apply to it. Ask an Audi dealer whether your VIN has any open campaigns before paying for a major repair.
